In 2008, Shell announced it would partner with Qatar Petroleum and build Pearl GTL in order to produce cleaner-burning diesel and kerosene, base oils for top-tier lubricants, a chemical feedstock called naphtha (used to make plastics) and normal paraffin, which is used to produce detergents. Today, the plant in Ras Laffan Industrial City, 80km north of Doha, Qatar, is the largest gas-to-liquids plant in the world. At the peak of construction 52,000 workers from 65 countries were deployed on the site and overall it took the team 500 million man-hours to design and build. As well as being the biggest, Pearl GTL is also one of the most complex and challenging energy projects in the world – the GTL technology alone has 3,500 patents. - See more at: http://www.rigzone.com/news/oil_gas/a/134300/Shells_Pearl_GTL_The_Largest_GasToLiquids_Plant_In _The_World#sthash.dRKFZh59.dpuf

Former BP Boss Tony Hayward Enjoys the Small Time (https://www.google.com/url?rct=j&sa=t&url=http://blogs.wsj.com/corporate-intelligence/2014/07/30/former-bp-boss-tony-hayward-enjoys-the-small-time/&ct=ga&cd=CAEYASoUMTMwNzM1ODM3MDI5OTk4NTg0MzQyGmY4NGRjMjg 5ZDU2ZDI5ZmQ6Y29tOmVuOlVT&usg=AFQjCNEX_Him3ziiBbQw3GUGG98YCt3nIA) Wall Street Journal (blog)
" CompactGTL, is a company that sees potential profit turning natural gas into higher-value liquids such as synthetic crude and diesel."

“The holy grail for the industry is to find a way of scaling the technology so you can deploy it locally,” said Mr. Hayward, who chairs CompactGTL. Instead of connecting up to a giant gas field, CompactGTL sees opportunities in making synthetic diesel from gas produced as a byproduct of oil extraction. Currently, much of that gas is simply burned off, or “flared.”
CompactGTL plans to start construction next year on a $300 million plant in Kazakhstan that will convert gas into synthetic crude and potentially diesel. The plant, on a plot the size of a soccer field, will take around two years to build and will eventually produce around 3,000 barrels a day of liquids, the company says.

Velocys, the technology innovator for smaller scale gas-to-liquids (GTL), reached a final investment decision (FID) to proceed with construction of a commercial GTL plant using the company's technology.

The project is being funded by a joint venture (JV) between Waste Management, NRG Energy (NRG), Ventech Engineers International (Ventech) and Velocys, formed to develop a series of GTL plants in the US and other select geographies.

The plant, which is designed to be profitable on a standalone basis, will be located at Waste Management's East Oak landfill site in Oklahoma. It will provide a commercial reference site for the Velocys technology and will deploy a number of the company's full scale Fischer-Tropsch reactors.

If you have read this far then it could be a good time to have a close look at our LINC Energy (http://www.alternative-energy.com.au/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=7) posts as they have successfully married UCG with GTL and are about to start a UCG-GTL (http://www.ucg-gtl.com) plant in Poland that will give Poland energy independence and deal a huge blow to Russia's energy dominance.
