Default Korea Institute Tips 3x increase for Lithium Market by 2014 -

The Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade (KIET) one of Korea's leading economic think tanks has released a bullish forecast for the lithium market, tipping the global industry to be worth 41 billion won ($36 billion) by 2014 compared to 13 billion won last year, according to overseas reports. KIET said lithium batteries for cars would account for 43 per cent of the total market in the next five years.

This highlights the looming supply issues associated with Lithum supplies. From the Australian perspective this is an indication of coming supply demand in the very near future.

At the moment Australia has two companies mining Lithium they are:

Talison Lithium a non ASX listed company mining the Greenbushes Lithium-Tantalite deposit located in the south west of Western Australian approximately 250 km south of Perth. The Greenbushes pegmatitie is the world's largest hard rock tantalum resource and the largest and highest grade lithium minerals resource in the world.

Galaxy Resources ASX Code: GXY.
Galaxy is heading towards in-house production of super pure (99.9%) Lithium Carbonate that adds markedly to the value of its product. Galaxy has the MT Caitlin hard rock lithium deposit , 2 km north of the town of Ravensthorpe, W.A. GXY's current resource is 155t: (14.4 million tonnes at 1.08% Li2O) with an estimated mine life of 15 years and nearby exploration upside.

Australia has two Lithium explorers with JORC deposits: ORE with a very large Lithium Brine lake in Argentina and Reed Resources with the Mt Marion deposit resource of 145,550t (10.5Mt of 1.4% Li2O)

The images below shows that Australia has traditionally has played a large part in the world supply of Lithium and that we have a large percentage of the world's Lithium reserves and consequently we are well placed to take part in the lithium supply demand surge going forwards.
