Default Is China leading the development of coal-to-liquid (CTL) industry with six projects

BEIJING, Apr 23, 2010 (Xinhua via COMTEX) --

China is leading the development of coal-to-liquid (CTL) industry with six projects under operation or to be operated, far exceeding the development of CTL industry in other countries and regions of the world.

According to statistics from US-based US/China Energy and Environmental Technology Center, most CTL projects are currently located in China and the United States. China has six CTL projects under operation or to be operated, and the US is planning on more than 10 CTL projects without any of them under construction. Aside from them, South Africa has had one CTL project go into operation, and India, Australia and Japan are also considering the development of CTL projects.

In China, the Shenhua Group, the largest coal producer in China, is first in the world to master direct CTL technology. As well as this, its 180,000-mertic ton (tonne) indirect CTL project has gone into operation and a 3.8-million-tonne indirect CTL project plan has been submitted to the National Development and Reform Commission.

Zhang Yuzhuo, president of the Shenhua Group, said that it is planning to expand its CTL production capacity to 5.28 million tonnes by 2013, and further to 21.5 million tonnes by 2020.

A 160,000-tonne CTL project invested by the Inner Mongolia Yitai Group has also finished construction and now is under trial operation. The Yitai Group is planning to establish a 10-million-tonne large CTL base in the coal-rich Erdos, Inner Mongolia in 10 years. (Edited by Li Xiaohui, [email protected])
