Air NZ: Electric Plane
Air New Zealand has purchased its first electric plane and secured the right to purchase almost two dozen more.
The electric plane will initially only carry cargo, but it could eventually be used for passenger flights. Air New Zealand is hopeful that other propulsion methods will be developed by 2030, and that the airline will be able to adopt them. The ALIA has already flown 460 kilometers without being recharged and takes 40 to 60 minutes to fully recharge. Mr Foran said Air New Zealand will look to use it to carry NZ Post cargo on 150 kilometer routes and experiment with range to understand where it would need to build charging infrastructure. Based on the information provided, the ALIA could fly three 150-kilometer routes on a single charge. It would take 13.33 minutes to recharge the ALIA for each 150-kilometer route.
