Default Strengthening Clean Energy Supply Chains

Strengthening Clean Energy Supply Chains for Decarbonisation and Economic Security
OECD Report for the G7 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors

Global value chain analysis can be used to study
the main vulnerabilities and comparative advantages
that G7 countries face in the supply chains of
EV batteries, solar PV panels, and wind turbines.

Specifically, such analysis can break down these supply chains into
their component elements and use publicly available data to identify the degree of
geographical and market concentration.

Main points:

Concentration risk: Clean energy supply chains have high geographic and market concentration, creating chokepoints.

Policy trilemma: Balancing secure supply chains, clean energy adoption, and competition is difficult.

Trade-offs: Diversification can increase costs, domestic production can spark conflict.

Solutions: International cooperation can reduce risks and promote sustainability.

Actions:

Facilitate trade and R&D collaboration.

Support resource-rich countries in downstream stages.

Promote social and environmental standards.

Learn from initiatives like the Minerals Security Partnership.

In short: Clean energy needs diversified, collaborative supply chains to ensure reliable transition without sacrificing competition or sustainability.
