Default Australia to replace Canada's Natural Gas decline

Australia is fast becoming one of the world's leading exporters of natural gas via LNG. In addition to the vast supplies and untapped resources from Australia's North West Shelf we are now adding huge amounts of gas derived from our Coal Seam Gas in Queensland, SA, NT and NSW. (www.australian-gas.com explores the Australian gas investment scene).

Additionally we are seeing a new type of gas (Syngas) coming on stream... gas that is derived from burning coal underground. Already we have two UCG fired electricity generation plants underway and the upside is simply enormous. (www.ucg-gtl.com is a website dedicated to exploring the Australian scene.) Last year one of our very small companies discovered over a trillion tons of deep coal that is very suitable for UCG and that same company is on the verge of discovering billions or perhaps even trillions of cubic feet of conventional natural gas. Whatever way we look at it Australia is about to become the Southern hemisphere's Qatar.

But does Australia have a Northern hemisphere gas play in the offing?

Recently we have seen that North America might not have sufficient gas and that its Canadian neighbor's gas wells are declining with a 12% decrease in natural gas production since 2001. This decline in Canadian gas could be important as last year the USA imported around 3.7 TCF.

Last year we saw Russia's President Putin put the squeeze on Europe's gas supplies. So perhaps there is a geopolitical imperative to also consider.

The rate limiting step for Gas is its transport, so at the moment gas is a regional commodity but as we build more LNG plants and giant refrigerated tankers we may well see Australian gas begin to seriously compete with Saudi/UAE oil, especially as gas is a much cleaner fuel source for industry and transport than oil.

"Australia the lucky energy country"
