Default Petratherm drills first hole successfully

Petratherm completes geothermal project in SA

Updated 15 December 2009
Adelaide-based geothermal energy explorer and developer, Petratherm has reached a milestone in the Paralana geothermal energy project in SA with the Paralana 2 well successfully complete at a depth of 3725 metres.

The project’s first injector well is now cased and cemented and the Weatherford 2000HP Le Tourneau Lightning Drill Rig was released last week for its next assignment.

Petratherm MD, Terry Kallis says he was delighted to confirm this major milestone had been achieved on behalf of the project’s joint venture partners Beach Energy and TRUenergy Geothermal.

“This is a great outcome for us, to drill to depth, to have the well secured with steel casing and we also have seen evidence of permeability and inflows of hot fluids,” says Terry.

The project was on track in its bid to create Australia’s first commercial geothermal energy plant delivering zero emission power by 2011.

Casing of the well was completed in the middle of last week. Temperature measurements are now planned to be taken in mid to late January after the well has time to stabilize as drilling work cools existing temperatures.

“This should give us a more accurate assessment of the long-term well temperature but experience with similar wells has shown it can take a few months for temperatures to reach their full equilibrium,” he says.
