Default Gas independence for Perth Vs Water Quality?

Reproduced from part of an Australian-Shares/forums post.....

Perth having endured a sustained drought would logically be a hot-bed of resistance to anything that could affect the Perth Basin's artesian water quality...

As Australian Worldwide Energy ASX: AWE plans to drill Western Australia's first shale gas exploration well next month, the state's Mines and Petroleum Minister Norman Moore has said shale gas could help create a new industry and provide greater certainty for existing businesses in Western Australia.

The state's first shale gas well, the Woodada Deep-1 well, is located in the onshore Perth Basin, about 100 km north of Lancelin, near Eneabba., right on top of the aquifer. Ironically at one of the aquifer's least saline areas.

According to Govt. sources: "Potential bore yields are very large, ranging up to 20 000 kL/day. The major bore fields supply Perth and Geraldton (from Allanooka), and mineral sands operations at Eneabba and Cooljarloo. The aquifer is also used for Eneabba and Badgingarra town water supply, and for farm water supply. There is currently minor horticultural use, and there is significant development potential of the aquifer." Please note that the original references used have been removed from the Govt. sites they were sourced from.... The links below likely provide the information that you will need to form your own opinion.

AWE estimates that the middle interval of one of these shale intervals (the Carynginia Shale) alone holds a gross Gas in Place of 13-20 trillion cubic feet (Tcf).

AWE now holds a position in approximately 1 million gross acres of prospective Shale Gas acreage in the Perth Basin (620,000 net acres), with high levels of equity in the majority of the permits and licenses.

One of the major complications of shale gas extraction is said to be ground water and aquifer contamination... from what I have read the jury is still out. There is a vast amount of commentary surrounding the issue mainly emanating from the USA, much of it ill-informed and inflammatory.

Perhaps it would be timely for an Australian assessment to be widely circulated... in the meantime is this a classic battle looming... Gas independence for Perth versus potential water quality degradation?

Default Will Perth chance its aquifer to gain shale oil gas?

Further to my post above:

I see that: "A report by JP Morgan said the coal gas seam industry had significant water risks, including a reduction in the water supply to towns and landowners, reduced quality, gas migration to water bores and the safe storage of salt."
http://nqr.farmonline.com.au/news/st...px?storypage=0

These are the same risks that are associated with Shale Gas extraction and as yet we haven't seen anything from AWE to re-assure Perth residents or perhaps more interestingly nothing from the Perth based press exploring the issues....

Put simply:
Perth seems to be in a long term drought
Perth has a high dependence on the aquifer that AWE is targeting
Can Shale Gas be extracted without contaminating the aquifer?

Default AWE to frac two Perth Basin shale wells soon

According to today's petroleumnews.net AWE is pressing on with its Perth basin shale gas plans....

"On the drilling front, AWE is planning to drill Arrowsmith-2, which will twin an existing well, and carry out fracture stimulation of both this well and the existing Woodada Deep-2 well."

"Clement said the two fracs would provide good points to determine the performance of the shales in the Perth Basin, adding he was very positive about the prospects there."

In the light of the ABC's Four Corners program last night that highlighted the growing discontent by Qld and NSW farmers and blockies about the problems with QGC's CSM program you'd think that Perth's residents might be getting just a little worried. http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/content/2011/s3144806.htm

The situation re Qld and NSW seemed dire enough to spark quite a lot of protest but for AWE to target the Perth Basin in the midst of a record breaking drought seems a step to far.... Still as yet no protest from Perth. Heads in the sand or do they know something that we don't?

Default Fertile plains under frack attack

Interesting how the battle lines are emerging in NSW. This article seems to give a good summary....

"Durum wheat is going head-to-head with coal seam gas in a battle over the state's top agricultural region, writes Leonie Lamont.

Default Perhaps amazingly: AWE Fracs EPA

Western Australia's Environmental Protection Authority advised AWE on Monday that it did not need to assess the company's application for hydraulic fracture stimulation on its onshore Arrowsmith-2 shale gas play near the town of Dongara.

Default Perth most reliant on groundwater

I first raised the issue of the potential dangers of "fraccing" in regard to Perth's dependance on its groundwater around a year ago. The recent publication: State of Australian Cities contains the image reproduced below.

As can be readily seen Perth is Australia's only capital city that is highly/heavily dependent on groundwater.

Should Perth's people be worried? I don't know but I find the lack of published information or discussion worrying.

Default Does WA give a Frac?

AS THE coal seam gas industry deals with the latest scare about the effects of CSG activity on water resources, legislation has passed the federal lower house to establish a $200 million independent CSG and coal mining expert committee.

The committee?s work will be supported by a national partnership agreement with relevant state and territory governments. So far, Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia have signed the agreement while negotiations with Victoria and the Northern Territory are continuing.

WA?????
