Default Japan set to begin trial output at a gas-to-liquid (GTL) plant

Japan firms to start trial run of gas-to-liquid plant

Thu Apr 16, 2009 6:31am EDT

TOKYO, April 16 (Reuters) - A Japanese consortium of oil and engineering firms is set to begin trial output at a gas-to-liquid (GTL) plant using new technology that can directly process natural gas containing carbon dioxide gas into naphtha, kerosene and gas oil, the companies said on Thursday. The plant, which will produce 500 barrels per day during the two-year trial period, was built by a group of firms including oil developers Japan Petroleum Exploration (Japex) (1662.T) and Inpex (1605.T) and refiner Nippon Oil (5001.T).
The group, which also includes refiner Cosmo Oil (5007.T), engineering firms Chiyoda Corp (6366.T) and Nippon Steel Engineering Co, aims to build a commercial plant as early as the year starting in April 2011, in cooperation with state-run Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corp (JOGMEC).
The consortium has said it aims to develop GTL technology that is more cost effective than that of the oil majors.

GTL technology, which can be used to exploit unexplored fields with confirmed gas reserves, makes it possible to create clean fuel that does not contain sulphur or aromatic content. The experimental plant was built in the compounds of a Japex subsidiary in Niigata in northwest Japan. (Reporting by Osamu Tsukimori)
