Liquid Tin battery: White Hot
Summary of New Atlas' White-hot thermal grid battery aims to decimate lithium on price article
A new grid-level energy storage technology called a thermal battery has been developed. It uses super-heated liquid metal to store energy for extended periods of time. The system is made of cheap materials like graphite and tin, and it is claimed to be much cheaper than lithium-ion batteries. It is also safer than lithium batteries because there is no risk of fire or explosion. However, the round-trip efficiency is only 50%, which is lower than lithium-ion batteries. The first 1-megawatt-hour prototype is expected to be completed in 2026.
