Novel technology reaches 100-kW wireless power transfer for passenger vehicle

New wireless EV charging pad developed by ORNL is as efficient as wired plug, reaching 100 kW.

This is significantly faster than existing commercially available options (e.g. Hevo's 12 kW).

The system uses a "lightweight polyphase electromagnetic coupling coil design" for faster transfer.

It can add 50% charge to a car battery in under 20 minutes.

Challenges include lack of standardization and infrastructure for in-vehicle compatibility.
