Default China to be Site of First Commercial Implementation of TRIG Coal Gasifier

China to be Site of First Commercial Implementation of TRIG Coal Gasifier
Beijing Guoneng Yinghui Clean Energy Engineering Co., Ltd. (Beijing Guoneng) has awarded KBR a contract to provide licensing, engineering services and proprietary equipment for the implementation of KBR's and Southern Company's Transport Integrated Gasification technology (TRIG) at a power plant operated by Dongguan Tianming Electric Power Co., Ltd. (Dongguan TMEP) in Guandong Province, Peoples Republic of China.

The contract award marks China as the site for the first worldwide commercial implementation of the TRIG technology with the goal of producing low-emission, coal-based electricity. TRIG coal gasification technology was co-developed developed by Southern Company, KBR Inc., and others including the US Department of Energy (DOE), at the DOE's research facility in Wilsonville, Ala., that is managed and operated by Southern Company.

IGCC IGCC plants use two power cycles, extracting more electricity from a tonne of coal.
Syngas produced by coal gasification is used to generate electricity in a gas turbine. The exhaust gas from the turbine is the used to heat water, producing steam to generate additional electricity from a steam turbine.

At the Dongguan TMEP facility, TRIG technology will be added to an existing gas turbine combined cycle plant so that it can use synthetic gas from coal as its fuel for generating electricity, rather than fuel oil.

The 120-megawatt Dongguan TMEP plant, expected to begin operation in 2011, would demonstrate an example of advanced US IGCC (integrated gasification combined cycle) technology that is being developed in partnership between the DOE and industry. This IGCC technology is compatible with carbon capture, and its deployment in China is a step toward positioning IGCC for future integration with carbon capture technology.

Southern Company subsidiary Mississippi Power currently is seeking regulatory approval to build a 582-megawatt plant using TRIG technology in Kemper County, Miss. That plant would include 65% carbon capture and sequestration.

Default "TRIG coal gasification technology"

TRIG Coal Gasification Technology

TRIG (Transport Integrated Gasification) is an advanced coal gasification technology designed to efficiently convert low-rank coal into synthesis gas (syngas).

Here are some key points about TRIG:

Target feedstock: Unlike traditional gasification methods, TRIG specifically targets low-rank coals such as lignite, sub-bituminous coal, and high ash coal, which are often uneconomical due to their high moisture and ash content.

Operating principle: It utilizes a circulating fluidized bed reactor operating at moderate temperatures (1,500 – 1,950 °F) and high solids circulation rates and gas velocities. This promotes efficient conversion and high throughput.

Benefits:
Economic utilization of low-rank coal: TRIG makes it possible to utilize these previously under-utilized resources for energy production.
Clean syngas production: The process is designed to produce clean, high-quality syngas with low emissions.

Moisture advantage: The moisture content in low-rank coal, which is typically seen as a disadvantage, is utilized as a reactant in the TRIG process, contributing to higher efficiency.

Development and potential:
Developed by KBR (Kellogg, Brown, & Root), TRIG was successfully tested at the Power Systems Development Facility (PSDF) in Alabama, USA, in collaboration with the US Department of Energy (DOE).

While China was initially planned to be the site for the first commercial implementation, the project's current status is unclear.

It's important to note that while TRIG offers potential benefits like cleaner coal utilization, coal gasification itself still raises concerns about greenhouse gas emissions and the overall environmental impact.

Here are some additional points to consider:

Carbon capture and storage (CCS): TRIG technology is compatible with CCS, which could potentially mitigate some of the environmental concerns. However, CCS technology is still under development and faces its own challenges.

Alternative energy sources: As the world strives for a sustainable future, renewable energy sources are often considered a more sustainable and environmentally friendly option compared to fossil fuel-based technologies like coal gasification.

Overall, TRIG represents an innovative approach to utilizing low-rank coal, but it's crucial to consider both its potential benefits and drawbacks within the broader context of energy production and environmental sustainability

Default 2024

As of today, March 8, 2024, there is no publicly available information confirming the existence of any commercial plants currently operating with TRIG coal gasification technology. Gemini.Google

While there were initial plans for the first commercial implementation in China in 2009, it's unclear whether the project was successfully completed and became operational. Finding definitive information online about the project's current status might be challenging due to the limited timeframe and potential language barriers.

Here are some suggestions for further research:

Search for news articles or reports published from 2011 onwards, focusing on keywords like "TRIG coal gasification", "Dongguan TMEP", and "China." This timeframe coincides with the expected operational start year of the project, as mentioned in the initial announcement.
Contact the technology developers: KBR (Kellogg, Brown, & Root) might potentially have updated information about the project's status. Their website or official channels could be a starting point for reaching out.
Consult industry reports or publications: Specialized reports and publications related to the energy sector might offer insights into the current state of TRIG technology and its commercialization efforts.
Remember, the lack of readily available information online doesn't necessarily mean the project was unsuccessful. However, it highlights the potential challenges in obtaining definitive confirmation about its current status.
