India: UCG project initiated
India’s Ministry of Coal initiates underground coal gasification project
Under the strategic direction of the Ministry of Coal, Eastern Coalfields Ltd (ECL) has embarked on an innovative pilot project for underground coal gasification (UCG) at the Kasta coal block in Jamtara District, Jharkhand. More: INDIA’S FIRST PILOT PROJECT FOR UNDERGROUND COAL GASIFICATION LAUNCHED IN JHARKHAND Here's a summary of the key points India's first Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) pilot project: Initiated by the Ministry of Coal at the Kasta coal block in Jharkhand Aims to transform coal into useful gases for industrial processes Policy framework for UCG approved in 2015 Fossil fuel consumption in India: Increased by 8% in 2023 Accounted for 89% of total energy consumption India consumed more coal than Europe and North America combined Karnataka's first gas plant: 370 MW gas-based combined cycle power plant in Yelahanka, Bengaluru Scheduled for commissioning in July Faced opposition and legal issues due to environmental concerns.
