Default Pumped hydropower storage plants = over 90% of all installed storage capacity

https://www.hydropower.org/factsheets/pumped-storage

Summary of the Pumped Storage factsheet from the International Hydropower Association:

Pumped storage hydropower is a form of energy storage that uses the potential energy of water to generate electricity.

It works by pumping water from a lower reservoir to an upper reservoir during periods of low electricity demand, and then releasing the water back to the lower reservoir through a turbine to generate electricity during periods of high demand.

Pumped storage is a mature and reliable technology that can be used to balance the output of variable renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power.

It is also a cost-effective way to store energy, and can be used to provide grid stability and reliability.

The global pumped storage capacity is currently around 140 GW, and is expected to grow to over 200 GW by 2030.

The main challenges facing pumped storage development are the high upfront costs and the need for suitable sites with a large difference in elevation between the two reservoirs.

Despite these challenges, pumped storage is a key technology for the future of the electricity grid, and is likely to play an increasingly important role in the integration of variable renewable energy sources.

Here are some additional benefits of pumped storage hydropower:

It is a low-carbon source of energy, as it does not produce any emissions during operation.
It is a flexible source of energy, as it can be ramped up and down quickly to meet changes in demand.

It is a reliable source of energy, as it can operate 24/7, regardless of the weather conditions.
Pumped storage hydropower is a valuable tool for the future of the electricity grid. It is a clean, reliable, and flexible source of energy that can help to balance the output of variable renewable energy sources and ensure a secure and reliable supply of electricity.

IHA's Hydropower Pumped Storage Tracking Tool maps the locations and vital statistics for existing and planned pumped storage projects. It is the most comprehensive and up-to-date online resource on the world's water batteries.

The tool shows the status of a pumped storage project, it's installed generating and pumping capacity, and its actual or planned date of commissioning.
