CCTV reporter Gu Junling : This is the world's first "dual tower and one machine" solar thermal energy storage power station. The main project has entered the commissioning stage. It can not only generate electricity normally when there is sunlight, but also store excess solar energy with the help of molten salt to achieve 24-hour stable and uninterrupted power output.

This solar thermal energy storage power station located in Guazhou, Gansu Province, has two adjacent heat absorption towers and a shared steam turbine generator. Nearly 30,000 heliostats are installed under the towers, with a lighting area of ​​800,000 square meters. The power station uses these mirrors that track the sun's rotation to concentrate sunlight into the heat absorption tower to heat the molten salt, thereby driving the steam turbine to generate electricity.

How many houses could 1.8 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year could power?

For China:

Average annual household electricity consumption:

According to recent data, the average urban household in China consumes about 1,300-1,500 kWh per year. Let's use 1,400 kWh as our estimate.

Calculation:
Number of houses = 1,800,000,000 kWh / 1,400 kWh
≈ 1,285,714 houses

For Australia:

Average annual household electricity consumption:
According to the Australian Energy Regulator, the average annual electricity usage for a residential customer is about 5,000 kWh.

Calculation:
Number of houses = 1,800,000,000 kWh / 5,000 kWh
= 360,000 houses

(The same amount of energy (1.8 billion kWh) can power many more households in China than in Australia primarily due to lower per-household consumption in China.)
