Solar and Silver
With Solar energy and electronics silver usage increasing so rapidly it could be time to get set in Silver.... and with recent changes that have bought solar energy equal or close to coal fired generation cost parity we may see a leap in the usage of silver and a consequent supply deficit exacerbated by the current low prices. This theme is explored in depth in this article: Silver set to shine?
In 2013, about 288 million ounces of silver was used for electronics and solar; about 1/3 of total demand up from 11% in 2009. Bloomberg reports that residential deployment of solar panels is up 38% so far in 2014. Total installations are up 79% over last year. However beyond our silver ETFs silver investment isn't such an easy task for Australian (ASX) investors.... And this leads me to: Investigator Resources Limited (ASX code: IVR) a metals explorer focusing on silver, copper and gold discoveries, close to infrastructure on the Eyre and Yorke Peninsulas, South Australia with the objective of becoming a producer. The company is named after Matthew Flinders'ship, "The Investigator", a small former coal barque that outsailed the French in mapping the coasts of the Eyre and Yorke Peninsulas to claim South Australia for the British. Investigator Resources belies its small size by applying innovative concepts and exploration techniques to secure quality ground and to compete for the next major metal discovery in Australia. You can get a good idea of what IVR has to offer here.

Silver is likely to post another supply deficit this year
"Silver is likely to post another supply deficit this year, following last year's trend, further tightening the market. Despite the US imposing higher tariffs against Chinese solar panel imports last week, its new climate change policy announced last week is likely to lift the demand for photovoltaics in general. Solar panels are the fastest segment of demand growth for silver fabrication, with a compound annual growth rate of 20% over the past decade and are now as significant as photography in terms of sources of silver demand," said ETF Securities. If silver notches a near-term rally, upside would likely be fueled by short-covering. Last week, short bets on silver climbed to the highest levels in eight years, Bloomberg reported, citing the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission. More
