Julia Creek Vanadium is a vanadium project located in North-West Queensland, Australia. It is owned and operated by Australian mining company, QEM Limited (ASX: QEM)

QEM Limited (ASX:QEM) is focused on the exploration and development of the Julia Creek Vanadium and Oil Shale Project, a unique world class critical minerals resource with the potential to deliver and utilise innovative and sustainable energy solutions.


The Julia Creek Vanadium project consists of a large, high-grade vanadium deposit, with an estimated resource of over 1 billion tonnes. The deposit is located near the town of Julia Creek, which is situated approximately 250 kilometers east of Mount Isa.

The pilot plant test program for vanadium and oil extraction has delivered positive results, exceeding expectations. The pilot plant was able to operate effectively, processing 6kg of Julia Creek oil shale and achieving key run targets for autoclave temperature and pressure.

The vanadium extraction results were highly encouraging, with extraction efficiencies of 71.5% achieved on shale ash leached by acid for four hours. This is a significant achievement and demonstrates the potential for large-scale vanadium extraction.

The oil shale extraction results were also impressive, indicating that oil yields were 142% of that reported under a Modified Fischer Assay (MFA). This increase in oil yield was made possible with the use of an innovative hydrogen donor solvent.

Subsequent pilot runs will focus on optimizing yields of both vanadium and oil, progressively improving and maximizing the extraction processes. This will lead to the development of a Process Flow Sheet, outlining the most efficient and effective method for large-scale vanadium and oil extraction. (This might be old news )

In addition to its use in alloys, vanadium is also used in the production of rechargeable batteries, particularly the vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB), which is a type of large-scale energy storage system. VRFBs are being developed and deployed to help integrate renewable energy sources into power grids and to improve the reliability and stability of the grid.

Due to its importance in these and other applications, vanadium has been identified as a critical metal by various countries and organizations, including the United States, the European Union, and the International Energy Agency. The designation of a metal as "critical" typically means that its supply may be at risk due to a combination of factors such as limited reserves, geopolitical instability, and growing demand.
